Man drops gun in movie theater, shooting self in buttocks

Police say a man accidentally shot himself in the buttocks at a Nevada movie theater during a showing of “The Bourne Legacy.”

The moviegoer was at the Century 14 theater Tuesday night when a gunshot rang out.
After receiving several calls reporting seven to eight shots, police in Sparks, Nev., dispatched police units as well as fire and medical crews only to find out one shot was fired by accident.
Witnesses inside the theater told officers the gun fell from the man’s pocket as he was adjusting himself in the seat, and it fired when it dropped to the floor, striking him in the buttocks.
The 56-year-old man then reportedly stood up, apologized to those around him and left the theater before police arrived. He checked himself into a nearby VA hospital in Reno, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his buttocks, according to a police report. His injury is not considered to be life-threatening.
Police say there was no panic in the theater and that only five people reported hearing the gunshot out of the approximately 30 people in the audience. No one else on the scene was injured.
Police said the man has a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm.

Party trick gone wrong, he wont be sitting for a while.

A NORTHERN Territory man may be flown to Adelaide after a party trick involving setting off firecrackers between his buttocks went badly wrong.

The 23-year-old man was at a party in the Darwin suburb of Rapid Creek on Saturday night when he decided to let the cracker off, NT Police said.
"It appears a party was in full progress when a young male decided to place a firework between the cheeks of his bottom and light it," said Senior Sergeant Garry Smith.
"What must of seemed to be a great idea at the time has backfired, resulting in the male receiving quite severe and very painful burns to his cheeks, back and private bits," Snr Sgt Smith said.
Alcohol was a possible factor involved in the stunt, police said.
Paramedics were called although the man had reportedly already taken himself to hospital by the time they arrived.
On Monday police said they believed he would be flown to a specialist burns unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
A Royal Darwin Hospital spokeswoman was unable to confirm the man would be flown to Adelaide but said flights to the specialist unit would indicate he had was seriously injured.
The man's woes may not be over once his burns heal.
Police said anyone possessing fireworks outside of an approved period faces a $282 fine.
Fireworks in NT can only legally be set off on July 1, known as Territory Day, when the region celebrates its anniversary of being awarded self-governance.
After that day they must be disposed of, but fireworks are often set off for weeks afterwards as people use leftover supplies.

Lion cubs Spike and Spot spared from circus cruelty!

Thanks to everyone who supported Animals Australia’s campaign to save lion cubs Spike and Spot from life in a travelling circus. The planned transfer of the young animals from Darling Downs Zoo to the circus hasn't taken place and it seems the cubs are staying put for now.

We have received feedback that the owners of Darling Downs Zoo reconsidered their plans after pressure from the media, the Zoo and Aquarium Association and the thousands of emails from concerned members of the public. This is very good news for the cubs and we applaud Darling Downs Zoo for taking the community's views seriously.

Spike and Spot are two of four lion cubs that were born in Darling Downs Zoo in October 2011. If the zoo had sent them to a circus, they would have spent the rest of their lives (potentially 20+ years) on the road in a small, barren enclosure with no opportunity to express their natural behaviour.

The voices of Animals Australia supporters played a critical role in helping to save these cubs from the cruelty of circus life. Thank you! We will be keeping a close watch on these cubs to ensure this decision by Darling Downs Zoo is final.

Meanwhile, you can help to save other animals from the misery of life in a circus by pledging to say no to animal circuses.

A bet placed on Wimbledon champion Roger Federer nearly a decade ago has netted more than £100,000 for Oxfam. But how popular are so-called future wagers?

Nine years ago, Nick Newlife made a wager of £1,520, at odds of 66/1, that Swiss tennis star Roger Federer would win seven Wimbledon titles by 2019.
Although his prediction proved to be accurate, Newlife didn't live long enough to enjoy his winnings. He died in 2009, leaving the betting slip to Oxfam in his will.
Newlife obviously had a penchant for this sort of gambling. A previous wager - that Federer would win 14 Grand Slam events - had cost the same bookmaker, William Hill, nearly £17,000. This was also paid out to Oxfam.
And on Monday, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes, a punter staked £10,000 at 4/1 for Andy Murray to win the Wimbledon title at some time in the future.

Dementia triggers

UK experts are to begin a study to find out if stress can trigger dementia.

A Swedish study that followed nearly 1,500 women for a period of 35 years found the risk of dementia was about 65% higher in women who reported repeated periods of stress in middle age than in those who did not.
